Dr. Frank Chinisci
Dr. Chinisci earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Mexico in 1978 and his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Southern California College of Optometry in 1984. He has served as an optometrist for the Indian Health Service and contact lens consultant for Sunsoft Corporation, a national contact lens company. While working for Sunsoft, Dr. Chinisci was involved in several contact lens studies in the areas of soft contact lens correction of astigmatism and bifocal contact lenses. He is a member of the American Optometric Association, the New Mexico Optometric Association, the American Diabetes Association and the Central New Mexico Optometric Association. He has served as the President of the New Mexico Affiliate of the American Diabetes Association, the President of the Bernalillo County Optometric Association and the President of the New Mexico Optometric Association. Dr. Chinisci has been in private practice since 1984 and is one of the founders of Sandia Vision Clinic.
Dr. David Magnus
Dr. Magnus received his undergraduate education at Dartmouth College and his Optometry degree from the New England College of Optometry in 1981. He completed both an internship with State University of New York College of Optometry and a residency in hospital-based optometry at the VA Medical Center in Albuquerque. Dr. Magnus went on to become Chief of the Optometry Section at the Albuquerque Hospital. In 1987, Dr. Magnus helped open Omega Eyecare Center and later VisionAmerica of New Mexico, serving as Center Director for 15 years. Dr. Magnus joined the clinical staff of Sandia Vision Clinic and became a co-owner of the practice in 2004. Dr. Magnus is also a Clinical Examiner for the New Mexico Board of Optometry and a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry.
Dr. William Fite
Dr. Fite received a Bachelor of Science in Health Services in 1974 from Pacific University. He graduated from the Pacific University College of Optometry in 1977. He worked for the Veterans Administration and the Indian Health Service shortly after graduation. The bulk of his career has been in private practice in Albuquerque. Dr. Fite joined Sandia Vision Clinic in 2005. He is a member of the American Optometric Association. He is a member and past treasurer of the New Mexico Optometric Association. Dr. Fite also served as president of the Bernalillo County Optometric Association.
Dr. Melissa Hockett
Dr. Melissa Hockett is a native of New Mexico, graduating from St. Pius X High School. She completed her Bachelors of Administration in accounting at Northeastern State University in Oklahoma. While at NSU, Dr. Hockett worked as an intern in the Contact Lens Clinic of Northeastern’s College of Optometry.
Dr. Hockett continued her graduate studies to earn her Doctor of Optometry at the University of Missouri-St. Louis College of Optometry. She was the recipient of several contact lens awards including the American Optometric Association Cornea and Contact Lens Section Student Research award. During her fourth year of optometry school, Dr. Hockett completed clinical externships in disease, primary eye care and pediatric/binocular vision and specialty contact lenses.
After earning her Optometric degree, Dr. Hockett practiced at a specialty contact lens private practice in Florida. Dr. Hockett is hand trained to fit hard to fit specialty contact lenses for patients needing keratoconus, bifocal or astigmatism contact lenses.
Dr. Hockett is an active member in the American Optometric Association and New Mexico Optometric Association. She is an InfantSee provider, providing free comprehensive eye exams for children 6 to 18 month old.
She lives is the Northeast Heights with her husband, son and two dogs.
Dr. Kara Gerger
Dr. Gerger graduated magna cum laude from the University of Florida in 2008, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Materials Science and Engineering. She continued her post-graduate studies at the New England College of Optometry in Boston, Massachusetts, earning degrees in both Master of Science in Vision Science and Doctor of Optometry in 2013.
Dr. Gerger completed her residency in Pediatric Optometry with the New England Eye Institute and Affiliates in 2014. Her rigorous training incorporated both primary and specialty pediatric eye care, including examination of children with disabilities, co-management of patients with strabismus and amblyopia, vision therapy following traumatic brain injury (TBI), and pediatric contact lens evaluations.
Dr. Gerger was honored to be a recipient of the 2014 Terrance N. Ingraham Pediatric Optometry Residency Award, recognizing residents with a passion for advancement in the field of Pediatric Optometry. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and a member of Beta Sigma Kappa Optometric Honor Society.
Dr. Gerger speaks English and Spanish and is pleased to offer comprehensive pediatric eye care to children of all ages from Sandia Vision Clinic’s Nob Hill location. She seeks to do so in an environment that is comfortable and engaging to her patients, and has created both an exam room and waiting area designed for children. Dr. Gerger is also active in the community, often attending vision screenings as part of the VSP Mobile Eyes Program.
In her spare time, Dr. Gerger enjoys traveling with her husband, hiking and couponing!
