Meet the experienced and friendly doctors and staff who make Sandia Vision Clinic the leading provider of vision care products and services in Albuquerque.

Dr. Frank Chinisci

Dr. Chinisci earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Mexico in 1978 and his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Southern California College of Optometry in 1984. He has served as an optometrist for the Indian Health Service and contact lens consultant for Sunsoft Corporation, a national contact lens company. While working for Sunsoft, Dr. Chinisci was involved in several contact lens studies in the areas of soft contact lens correction of astigmatism and bifocal contact lenses. He is a member of the American Optometric Association, the New Mexico Optometric Association, the American Diabetes Association and the Central New Mexico Optometric Association. He has served as the President of the New Mexico Affiliate of the American Diabetes Association, the President of the Bernalillo County Optometric Association and the President of the New Mexico Optometric Association. Dr. Chinisci has been in private practice since 1984 and is one of the founders of Sandia Vision Clinic.

Dr. David Magnus

Dr. Magnus received his undergraduate education at Dartmouth College and his Optometry degree from the New England College of Optometry in 1981. He completed both an internship with State University of New York College of Optometry and a residency in hospital-based optometry at the VA Medical Center in Albuquerque. Dr. Magnus went on to become Chief of the Optometry Section at the Albuquerque Hospital. In 1987, Dr. Magnus helped open Omega Eyecare Center and later VisionAmerica of New Mexico, serving as Center Director for 15 years. Dr. Magnus joined the clinical staff of Sandia Vision Clinic and became a co-owner of the practice in 2004. Dr. Magnus is also a Clinical Examiner for the New Mexico Board of Optometry and a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry.

Dr. Melisa Hockett

Dr. Melisa Hockett is a native of New Mexico, graduating from St. Pius X High School. She completed her Bachelors of Administration in accounting at Northeastern State University in Oklahoma. While at NSU, Dr. Hockett worked as an intern in the Contact Lens Clinic of Northeastern’s College of Optometry. She continued her graduate studies to earn her Doctor of Optometry at the University of Missouri-St. Louis College of Optometry. She was the recipient of several contact lens awards including the American Optometric Association Cornea and Contact Lens Section Student Research award.

After earning her Optometric degree, Dr. Hockett practiced at a specialty contact lens private practice in Florida. Dr. Hockett is hand trained to fit specialty contact lenses for patients with keratoconus, post surgical irregular corneas, bifocal or high astigmatism contact lenses. She is also a certified Paragon CRT orthokeratology contact lenses for myopia control.

Dr. Hockett is also a dry eye specialist, providing patients with expertise in treating and managing dry eye. She is the leading LipiFlow® provider in the state of New Mexico.
Dr. Hockett is an active member in the American Optometric Association, New Mexico Optometric Association and Albuquerque Lion’s Club.

She and her husband, Jeromy, enjoy attending activities with their children, Griffin and Sterling.

Dr. Lauren Byington

Dr. Lauren Byington earned her Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences at Louisiana State University. She continued her education at the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Byington was a member of Beta Sigma Kappa honor society and was awarded the 3rd year Clinician Award. She was granted a research fellowship in Vision Therapy and presented a poster at the COVD conference in 2012.

She was a member of the Student Volunteer of Optometric Services to Humanity and participated in mission trips to Columbia and Honduras. They performed free eye exams and dispensed donated eye glasses. She has a working knowledge of Spanish from these travels. She was active in the Lion’s Club during school and is still active here in Albuquerque.

She is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana; making her an avid LSU tiger and a Saint’s fan. She moved to Albuquerque in 2013 and joined Sandia Vision Clinic in 2016. She loves living in the mountains and enjoys skiing, hiking, camping, and all outdoor sports. She practices yoga regularly at Blissful Spirits. New Mexico food culture has made her feel at home; green chile is a main component now in all her New Orleans cuisine!

Dr. Nicolette Estrada

Dr. Estrada is a Albuquerque native who earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of New Mexico in 2011. She went on to earn her Doctor of Optometry degree at Western University of Health Sciences College of Optometry in Southern California in 2016.

Dr. Estrada is a member of the American Optometric Association and well as the New Mexico Optometric Association. In her spare time she likes to travel, and spend time with her family.
